Safety Briefing for Sailing on The Spellbound

  • We will wear life jackets once the wind hits Force 7 or 30kts

  • Know the location of additional life jackets in case of emergency

Harness and Tether

  • At night wear a safety harness with tether and clip in to designated attachment points.

Emergency Equipment

  • Familiarize yourself with the location of fire extinguishers, flares, liferaft, EPIRB, first aid kit, and Garmin Inreach

  • Know how to use emergency equipment if needed.

Communication

  • Know how to use the radio to send SOS

  • Learn how to get the GPS coordinates

  • Learn how to activate EPIRB and Inreach

Man Overboard Procedure

  • Know the signs of a crew overboard situation (shouts of "Man Overboard", crew pointing).

  • Maintain visual contact with person in water and continuously point at them.

  • Throw LifeSling2 flotation device and be prepared to assist with recovery.

  • Roll up jib and start engine

  • Familiarize with LifeSling2 instructions (S turn to sweep flotation device over man overboard)

Boom and Rigging

  • Be aware of boom swing during tacks and jibes.

  • Keep preventer lines tight at all times downwind

  • check that clutch is open before stripping a winch

  • Never stand in loops of line on deck.

  • Learn proper coiling technique (figure 8 on winch)

Moving About the Boat

  • Always maintain one hand for yourself and one for the boat. (Three points of contact)

  • Use handrails, grab rails and jacklines when moving around.

  • Notify others when going forward and never go on deck alone at night.

Galley Safety

  • Secure stove and appliances for sea before getting underway.

  • Use pot restraints and caution with hot liquids and food while cooking underway. (Use the water boiler when possible)

Head Safety

  • Only use the supplied boat toilet paper in the heads. Understand that literally anything else will clog the head.

  • Use the low side head if possible (if we’re sailing and heeled over)

  • If you accidentally put anything else in the head stop what you are doing immediately. Ask for neoprene gloves and a bucket and clear it or honestly ask any crew member it doesn’t matter. Taking apart the toilet while at sea is horrific and there’s no guarantee that it’ll go back together without leaking. It’s on the same level as losing the engine. If you’re unsure please ask. If I have to take apart a head I’m going to be super upset. Initial: _____________
